Last month, AHIP, the national organization for health plans, released state-by-state data breaking down employer-sponsored health coverage in each state. In Texas, almost 13.5 million Texans were covered by an employer-sponsored plan, the way the majority of Texans (52%) have health insurance coverage.

This report comes as Census data show that Texas continues to have both the highest rate and number of uninsured.

Some other key data points from the AHIP report include that:

  • 81% of employees with employer-sponsored coverage had the choice of more than one plan
  • 168 community hospitals in Texas are supported by employer insurance payments
  • $5,455 is the average annual contribution by employers for single coverage
