SB 2544 Support One-Pager – Closing Mediation Loopholes to Protect Patients and Prevent Abuse

TAHP supports Senate Bill 2544, which strengthens Texas’s balance billing protections by closing a loophole in the state’s independent dispute resolution process. While arbitration has a 90-day filing deadline, mediation currently has no limit—allowing some providers to submit years-old claims in bulk, overwhelming the system and driving up costs. SB 2544 establishes a 90-day mediation lookback period and includes a 120-day grace window to ease the transition. This fix ensures fairer dispute resolution and helps keep premiums in check for Texas families and employers.
