This session, Texas lawmakers are deciding how the state’s list of Medicaid covered drugs is managed, also known as the “preferred drug list” or “PDL.” That important debate should also include resolving patient protections and prescription drug denials in the program.

Families on Medicaid routinely face denials for medication coverage, often leaving the pharmacy without their necessary drugs. In fact, 30% of these denials stem from restrictions and administrative obstacles established by the preferred drug list. Moreover, patients are often forced off medications that work for them, often causing delays and denials of care.
